Practical Neurology: approach to the small animal patient

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This 2-day course is designed to develop knowledge and confidence in managing the small animal neurology patient.  We will recap key neuroanatomy and how to accurately localise the lesion, before moving on to discuss typical presentations, diagnostics, treatment and outcome for important brain, spinal cord and neuromuscular diseases. Approaches to common neurological emergencies will be reviewed, with an update on current management strategies. All sessions will include practical tips and case examples. 

TARGET AUDIENCE

The target group are veterinarians in small animal practice.

COURSE CONTENTS
Day 1: Practical neurology - managing the brain patient
  • Tips for performing and interpreting the neurological examination
  • How to recognise a forebrain, brainstem or cerebellar localisation
  • Seizures in dogs and cats: diagnosis and treatment
  • Important diseases affecting the brainstem and cerebellum
  • Managing the neurological emergency: encephalopathies
Day 2: Managing the spinal cord and neuromuscular patient
  • How to recognise a spinal cord or neuromuscular localisation
  • Common spinal cord conditions: diagnosis and treatment
  • Important diseases affecting the neuromuscular system
  • Managing the neurological emergency: spinal cord injuries
  • Apply your knowledge: case based discussions

LECTURER

Abbe Crawford, BVM&S BSc MVetMed PhD DipECVN MRCVS

Abbe graduated from the University of Edinburgh and undertook a Small Animal Rotating Internship at the Royal Veterinary College.  After 1.5 years in general practice she began a PhD in Neuroscience at the University of Cambridge, under the supervision of Professor Robin Franklin. In 2015 she enrolled in a Senior Clinical Training Scholarship in Neurology and Neurosurgery at the Royal Veterinary College, and in 2018 obtained the Diploma of the European College of Veterinary Neurology.  She is currently a Clinician in Neurology and Neurosurgery, with a Postdoctoral research position studying the cognitive phenotype of Duchenne muscular dystrophy and the potential therapeutic benefits of mitochondrial transplantation in hypoxic-ischaemic brain injury.
